CPO DEBATE
The power of procurement: From recovery to a stronger, more resilient future
Complex, multitiered, and interconnected supplier networks—more like complicated webs than chains—span the globe and are, in various ways, vulnerable to shocks. Executive attention to value-chain risk was already on the rise, but now it’s in the spotlight. While the COVID-19 pandemic delivered the biggest and broadest value-chain shock in recent memory, it is only one of a series of disruptions, ranging from cybersecurity attacks and financial crises to tsunamis and volcanos, that expose value chains, companies, and countries to financial losses. Every decade, companies lose half a year of revenue, on average, due to value-chain disruptions.
The way a supply chain is constructed can turn out to be a source of either vulnerability or resilience—and there is no one-size-fits-all formula that will work for every company. Having many tier-one suppliers can be challenging for procurement unless the downstream company actively shapes a cohesive core group into which all others feed. Relying on a narrow supply chain may cede strategic leverage to key suppliers. Each company will have to determine the balance that fits its management capabilities and its risk tolerance.
Join for a discussion on how procurement can lead companies out of the crisis and into the next normal. Forward-looking companies will go a step further and reimagine the role of procurement to emerge stronger, and better prepared for any future crisis.
